A self-proclaimed “angry band,” Idles formed in 2011 with a sound that fused punk rock with moody instrumentals and purposeful lyrics. Their early years were spent mostly under the radar as the group found their own unique voice and sound, making their breakthrough in 2017 with the release of their debut album Brutalism. The album was a major success and launched them into the public spotlight and was followed by more of the same with their critically acclaimed sophomore album Joy as an Act of Resistance in 2018. Idles’ musical style has mostly been described as punk rock or post-punk, however front man Joe Talbot has vehemently rejected these labels.
